PSY631 Psychological Testing & Measurements Assignment 1 Solution & Discussion Fall 2019

SEMESTER Fall 2019
Psychological Testing & Measurements
(PSY631)
Assignment No. 01
Due Date: November 27, 2019                          Marks: 20
Assignment Objective:
Upon completion of the assignment students will be able to understand the types of reliability and basics of psychometrics.

Dear Student;

In each of given scenarios, there is description of one type of reliability. You are required to read the scenarios carefully and identify the type of reliability in each scenario along with justification.
Scenario
Identification
1*4 (4)
Justification
4*4 (16)
Aimen performed a research study on Academic performance of college students. For this purpose, she selected two groups of students. One group got 75% or above marks while the second group of students got less than 75% marks. In order to compare and observe their results over a period of two years, she administered a 35 items scale in first semester and then in fourth semester with same groups of students. The scale gives the same results both of the times.

Rehan developed a scale to measure the
Self-concept of university students. In

this scale, there were 40 items covering diverse dimensions of Self-concept. The scale was administered to the sample of university students and calculated the total score for each half after random division. Rehan, in this study, randomly divided all items that state to measure the same construct into two sets.

Aima was interested in scale development based on technology usage. In this regard, she was required to ask students about their views towards technology. In this regard, she developed two forms of questionnaire that all relate to technology. After that she split the questions randomly into two sets, which would characterize the parallel forms.

A researcher intends to take student views regarding their course content to find out student’s satisfaction. In this regard, the researcher decided to evaluate the responses of the students by two or more examiner.

Instructions to follow:
  • Please record your answers in the given table.
  • In identification just mention the name of the particular type of reliability.
  • In justification section, give at least four points but avoid writing long stories.
  • Do not copy paste and write in your own words.

Marking scheme: 1+1+1+1 (for identification) 4+4+4+4 (for justification) =20
Note:
Only in the case of Assignment, 24 hours extra / grace period after the due date is usually available to overcome uploading difficulties which may be faced by the students on last date.  This extra time should only be used to meet the emergencies and above mentioned due dates should always be treated as final to avoid any inconvenience.

Important Instructions:
Please read the following instructions carefully before attempting the assignment solution.

Deadline:
  • Make sure that you upload the solution file before the due date. No assignment will be accepted through e-mail once the solution has been uploaded by the instructor.

  • It is advised to compose your document in MS-Word 2003.
  • Use black and blue font colors only.

Solution guidelines:
  • Every student will work individually and has to write in the form of an analytical assignment.
  • Give the answer according to question.
  • For acquiring the relevant knowledge don’t rely only on handouts but watch the video lectures and use other reference books also.

Rules for Marking

  • It is in any format other than doc (MS. Word)
  • It is cheated or copied from other students, internet, books, journals etc...

  • Solution:

Justification 4*4 (16)
Identification 1*4 (4)
Scenario

Test-retest reliability measures the consistency of results when you repeat the same test on the same sample at a different point in time. You use it when you are measuring something that you expect to stay constant in your sample.

Test-retest
Aimen performed a research study on Academic performance of college students. For this purpose, she selected two groups of students. One group got 75% or above marks while the second group of students got less than 75% marks. In order to compare and observe their results over a period of two years, she administered a 35 items scale in first semester and then in fourth semester with same groups of students. The scale gives the same results both of the times.
Group of respondents are presented with a set of statements designed to measure optimistic and pessimistic mindsets. They must rate their agreement with each statement on a scale from 1 to 5. If the test is internally consistent, an optimistic respondent should generally give high ratings to optimism indicators and low ratings to pessimism indicators. The correlation is calculated between all the responses to the “optimistic” statements, but the correlation is very weak. This suggests that the test has low internal consistency.
Internal consistency

Rehan developed a scale to measure the Self-concept of university students. In this scale, there were 40 items covering diverse dimensions of Self-concept. The scale was administered to the sample of university students and calculated the total score for each half after random division. Rehan, in this study, randomly divided all items that state to measure the same construct into two sets.
A set of questions is formulated to measure financial risk aversion in a group of respondents. The questions are randomly divided into two sets, and the respondents are randomly divided into two groups. Both groups take both tests: group A takes test A first, and group B takes test B first. The results of the two tests are compared, and the results are almost identical, indicating high parallel forms reliability

Parallel forms reliability

Aima was interested in scale development based on technology usage. In this regard, she was required to ask students about their views towards technology. In this regard, she developed two forms of questionnaire that all relate to technology. After that she split the questions randomly into two sets, which would characterize the parallel forms.
To measure interrater reliability, different researchers conduct the same measurement or observation on the same sample. Then you calculate the correlation between their different sets of results. If all the researchers give similar ratings, the test has high interrater reliability.

Interrater reliability

A researcher intends to take student views regarding their course content to find out student’s satisfaction. In this regard, the researcher decided to evaluate the responses of the students by two or more examiner.
